Terms and Conditions of Sale

Contracts for purchases through this website will be with Samuel French Ltd whose registered office is at Concord Theatricals, Aldwych House, 71 - 91 Aldwych, London WC2B 4HN, company registration number 1185289, VAT registration no. Excluding those customers who have a pre-arranged credit account facility, Samuel French Ltd must receive payment of the whole of the price for the items that you wish to purchase online before your order can be accepted and the contract formed. Your debit or credit card is charged when you click the Checkout button on the final Order Summary page, using Sagepay's secure online payment service (we do not store your card information). Once payment has been received Samuel French Ltd will confirm your purchase by sending you an e-mail at the e-mail address you have provided when you set up your account. This shipment e-mail will include your purchasing information (e-mail address, billing and shipping details, total cost of order) and a summary of your order. Samuel French Ltd's acceptance of your order brings into existence a legally binding contract between us on these terms.

Your account

To purchase goods from this website you will be required to register and set up an online account. You will be asked to supply an e-mail address and a password.

You are responsible for maintaining the confidentiality of your account and password and for restricting access to your computer, and you agree to accept responsibility for all activities that occur under your account or password.


The prices and charges quoted on this website are in UK pounds sterling and we accept MasterCard, Visa Credit and Debit (including Electron), and Maestro cards. All prices are subject to change without notice but you will be charged the price as shown in your basket. Postage and packing is not included in this price and will be added when you reach the checkout.

VAT and customs charges

Books in the UK are currently zero rated for VAT purposes and the prices quoted on this website reflect this. However, if you are ordering for delivery outside of the UK please be aware that you will be responsible for any local VAT charges that may be payable on delivery. Additionally, please note that your consignment may be subject to import duties and taxes, which are levied once the goods reach the country of destination. Any such charges levied must be borne by you. It is accepted by you that Samuel French Ltd has no control over additional charges in relation to customs clearance. Samuel French Ltd recommend that you check with your local customs officials or post office for more information regarding importation taxes / duties that may be applicable to your on-line order. You will be the importer responsible for any import VAT and duty that may be borne. In addition, any charges for import clearance will be borne by you, the customer.

Prices of VATable items (such as CDs, DVDs, merchandise, etc) are shown without VAT before being added to your basket.  The VAT element is added to the total of the order for those customers ordering from countries that are subject to VAT, and is displayed on the checkout pages, and the sales invoice generated by the order.

Delivery of goods

Our office opening hours are Monday to Friday, 9.30 a.m. until 5.30 p.m. If goods are listed as in stock Samuel French will dispatch at the earliest opportunity, usually by return, and depending on the carrier service used (for example, but not limited to, first or second class Royal Mail, courier services, Airmail, etc.) delivery will be within the time limits given by those carrier services and the delivery estimates displayed by us under "Select Shipping Method." If goods are not in stock then you will be given as accurate an estimate of delivery time as possible, in the form of the "Shipping Note" displayed beneath the Add to Cart button on each product page (e.g. "Usually dispatched within 7 days"); wherever possible we will contact you to advise of any unusual delays or variations from these estimates.  Please note that Samuel French publications are generally produced print on demand, and thus are "Usually dispatched within 2 business days" of the date of ordering, once printed, rather than being sent immediately from stock.

All overseas customers should allow as standard 28 days for delivery to take account of local postal service variables that are beyond our control.

Ownership of goods

Ownership of goods supplied by Samuel French Ltd only passes to the consignee once payment has been received in full. Once goods have been delivered to the consignee they will be held at consignee's own risk and Samuel French Ltd will not be liable for their loss or destruction.

Incorrect delivery or faulty goods

If the goods Samuel French Ltd delivers are not what was ordered, or are damaged, or defective, or the delivery is of an incorrect quantity Samuel French Ltd shall have no liability to you unless you notify Samuel French Ltd in writing by letter or email at our registered address (see above) of the problem within ten working days of the delivery of the goods in question. (Working day means every day of a calendar year apart from weekends and statutory and public holidays). If a problem is notified to Samuel French Ltd our only obligation will be, at our option:

i) to make good any shortage or non-delivery

ii) to replace or repair any goods that are damaged or defective

iii) to refund the amount paid for the goods in question in whatever way Samuel French Ltd chooses.

Cancellation of order and refunds

You have the right to cancel the order within seven working days following the receipt of the goods thus giving you an opportunity to inspect the goods in the same way as when purchasing in person in a bookshop (working day means every day of a calendar year apart from weekends and statutory and public holidays). Notice of cancellation should be made in writing by letter or email to customerservices@samuelfrench.co.uk. A refund will be issued by Samuel French Ltd in the form of a card refund (where a card was used for payment) or by cheque or BACS transfer (where a card was not used), within 30 days of notice of cancellation.

Goods must be returned to us in mint condition, fit for resale.


Books only may be exchanged, or a credit note issued (which may be subject to a 20% handling charge), up to an absolute limit of 30 days following the receipt of goods, on the authority of the Retail Sales Manager.  Proof of purchase will be needed.  Books must be returned in mint condition before exchange or credit can be considered by Samuel French Ltd.  Please contact customerservices@samuelfrench.co.uk or telephone (+44) (0)20 7054 7291 to enquire before returning any items.

We cannot accept the return of CDs and DVDs unless they are faulty.

No claims for exchange or credit are accepted after one month from the receipt of goods.

Return postage

If goods are accepted for return the return postage must be paid by you.

Force Majeure

Samuel French Ltd shall have no liability to you for any failure to deliver goods you have ordered or any delay in doing so or for any damage or defect to goods delivered that is caused by any event or circumstance beyond its reasonable control.

Brussels regulation

This regulation allows for any disputes to be settled by the laws of the country in which the consumer resides and not the country in which the supplier resides.


Samuel French Ltd operate a complaints handling procedure which is used to try to resolve disputes swiftly and amicably as soon as they arise. Entire Agreement

These Terms and Conditions, together with the current Samuel French Ltd website prices, delivery details and Samuel French Ltd contact details, set out the whole of our Agreement relating to the supply of goods to customers by Samuel French Ltd. These terms and conditions cannot be varied except in writing signed by a Director of Samuel French Ltd. In particular nothing said by any member of staff on behalf of Samuel French Ltd should be understood as a variation of these Terms and Conditions or as an authorised representation about the nature or quality of any goods offered for sale by Samuel French Ltd. Samuel French Ltd shall have no liability for any such representation being untrue or misleading.


Supplementary Terms and Conditions for Individual, Non-Institutional Subscription to PLAYS INTERNATIONAL & EUROPE Magazine via the Samuel French website


Subscription Terms and Conditions

The following Terms and Conditions apply to individual, non-institutional online subscribers of the magazine PLAYS INTERNATIONAL & EUROPE. For such subscriptions, the Terms & Conditions for the Sale of Goods from SAMUEL FRENCH Ltd. will apply, save for the additional provisions stipulated below.

The subscription contract to PLAYS INTERNATIONAL & EUROPE will be fulfilled by Theater Research Institute of Europe (TRIE) a.s.b.l. , a not for profit association registered in Luxembourg (Registre de Commerce et des Sociétés No. F5191) domiciled at 174A, rue de Kirchberg, L 1858 Luxembourg, and with subscription correspondence address at Seehalde 1, D 78464 Constance, Germany.

TRIE asbl will execute the contract on behalf of SAMUEL FRENCH Ltd. by ensuring timely delivery of PLAYS INTERNATIONAL & EUROPE magazine by postal or equivalent service to the address specified by the subscriber.

Use of Personal Data

Once a contract has been entered into between the subscriber and SAMUEL FRENCH, TRIE asbl will receive from SAMUEL FRENCH such data on the subscriber (name, delivery address, subscription period and amount paid) necessary for the fulfilment of TRIE’s delivery obligations. TRIE asbl undertakes not to use the data supplied for any purpose other than fulfilling the subscription order.

Subscription Period

PLAYS INTERNATIONAL & EUROPE, ISSN 0268 2028, is published quarterly. The subscription period is 12 months, and commences with the receipt of notification of TRIE asbl of the subscription. The then current issue of PLAYS INTERNATIONAL & EUROPE will be posted to the subscriber, and new issues will be posted as soon as published. Delivery will normally take place within two weeks from publication, but TRIE asbl cannot be held responsible for delays resulting from circumstances beyond its control or the control of its subcontractors.

Renewal of subscription

SF will offer by e-mail a continuation of the subscription to PLAYS INTERNATIONAL & EUROPE for a further year before the expiration of the initial subscription period. The renewal offer occurs annually.

Price Information

Prices displayed on the subscription section of the website at the time of placement of the order will be effective in relation to orders placed on-line. Prices quoted on screen include delivery charges and taxes (where applicable) and state the payment method. For ongoing Direct Debit payments or continuous credit card payments SAMUEL FRENCH/TRIE reserve the right to change prices at any time after the first year of your subscription has elapsed according to a publically available pricing schedule. If there is a change in the price of an annual subscription, the subscriber will be informed of any price adjustment when invited to renew.

Lost Issues

In the unlikely event of a magazine being lost in despatch, it will be at TRIE asbl’s discretion, after due examination of the particular circumstances, to replace the missing issue.

Third Party Rights

A person who is not a party to these Terms and Conditions shall have no right under the Contracts (Rights of Third Parties) Act 1999 to enforce or rely upon any provision of them.
