Two sisters, one severe and straight, the other hunch backed but beautiful, run a guest house on the bank of a remote, mighty river. They consider it their sacred duty to warn travelers of the river's danger in flood, offer shelter and bury those drowned, giving each a named white cross. Published in Reza de Wet Plays One with Missing and Miracle.
HERMIEN, respectively fifty and thirty years old. Tall and gaunt with colorless hair. Her appearance changes over the course of the play.
SUSSIE, respectively fifty and thirty years old. Shorter than Hermien with a prominent hump. She has full lips, large eyes, and long hair. Her appearance changes over the course of the play.
MAESTRO, between forty and fifty years old. A tall man with dark hair and deeply piercing eyes. He has a strong magnetic presence and a deep seductive voice.
EZMERELDA, fragile, doll-like young girl with an abundance of ringlets tumbling over her shoulders and down her back. Her eyes are large, her cupid-bow mouth is red and there are two red patches on her cheeks.
