Summary
Among the occupants of the hotel are Judge, Gary Mills a plilanderer, and Amelia Simpson a lovely lady married to Jack Simpson, a young officer whom she believes to be abroad. Gary is to be tried at the Assizes for running down a pedestrian while driving with Amelia, who is to be a witness for his defence. Gary's idea is that she shall make her appearance as repulsive as possible and pass for his newly-engaged cool-general. Thus it will seem most unlikely that he was cuddling her at the moment of the accident. Amelia reluctantly consents but yerns for the time when she may safely display her beauty in the hotel. Gary is aquitted, but in an exuberant moment reveals to the Judge - whom he does not recognize without his wig - the perjury and deception which secured him the verdict. The Judge hints at prosecution, but believing Amelia to be the cook and needing one urgently, is likely to relent if she accepts the post. In the meantime, Jack has arrived at the hotel with a charming member of the W.R.N.S - Betty Thornton. Gary is attracted by her and she is half inclined to help him by taking Amelia's place as the Judge's cook. Jack, however, discovers Gary and Amelia and threatens divorce. The Judge is a witness of the scene and does not want to be implicated by having one of the parties to the suit on his staff. The urgency of finding a substitute cook is doubled. Gary makes frantic efforts, which are at length crowned with success when Emma Stopes, a really good though plebian cook arrives. Jack and Amelia are reconciled. Gary, out of danger, ties up with Betty, and all is well.
