Summary
John Warbuton is to marry Anne Tremayne whose father keeps The Golden Ram. Tremayne is not quite easy in his mind, as he feels that John may one day come to regret that Anne is only an inn-keepers's daughter, and he tells him a story about the Lady Anne Trevenning, in the time of Charles II, who ran away and married the man who then kept The Golden Ram because he owed money. The story is enacted and John himself assists in the Lady Anne's hasty marriage, and engages in an exchange of pistorl shots with the rejected suitor. He wakes to find his own Anne beside him, having dreamed his part in her family history.
