Summary
This charming and gentle comedy is set in Elizabethan London. Unable to face marriage to the dull and stupid John Kynaston, Anny Byrd runs off to London on the eve of her wedding, helped by a young boy player. Once in London, Ann, disguised as a young man, joins Richard Burbage's company of actors and is soon playing female roles to great acclaim. Unfortunately for Ann, however, she finds herself in love with Burbage and unable to reveal her true identity. Underlying Ann's story is that of Burbage's search for a new patron to enable him to open his new playhouse, the Globe, in the face of huge debts. By the end of the play, Ann has come to terms with her unrequited love and a very influential and important new patron has been found, in the person of Elizabeth of England!
