Summary
The play is an attempt to bring pages of medieval history upon the present-day stage, employing modern prose to show phases in the career of this unfortunate son of the Black Prince. Special stress is laid upon Richard's desire to foster the arts and crafts, and to promote the cause of peace both in Ireland and France. How the young and gradually spoilt and embittered, as well as favourite-ridden King, was hamperede and impeded by the inveterate prejudices of his uncles, especially Gloucester, is shown vividly in the course of twelve scenes, ending with the penultimate stage of Richard's life.
