Summary
Robin Galbraith has hardly left Agnes's house after bringing her the dreaded news that her husband has been killed in the cause of the Covenant, for refusing to give any information which may lead to the capture of the fugitive James Renwick. They suspect that he knows the whereabouts of James, and it is only Agnes's intervention which saves Robin from sharing her husband's dreadful death. To the soldiers' amazement, Agnes offers them the hospitality of a meal, plenty of whiskey and a hut outside for the night. A chance remark suggests that Renwick himself is a visitor to the cottage of a night, and the captain is elated when Agnes accepts his bribe to aid in Renwick's capture when he does come. As soon as the men have gone to rest in the hut, Agnes takes a chain in order to fasten up the hut door, a quantity of dry straw and a candle and drifts out into the night. The next moment a burst of flame shows through the window. Agness has achieved her desire for revenge.
