Summary
Viola, some years older than her husband, has found the fame and money in the theatre which has eluded Peter but they are both determined that this shall make no difference to their married happiness. The general prospect looks less bleak when the landlady Mrs Battersby turns out to be an old pro and is delighted to welcome a famous actress; she confides in Viola that her daughter Edna was in show business until a young actor jilted her and absconded with her money while playing a date in Ditchbury. Viola remembers that this is the town about which Peter is always talking and her overstrained nerves lead her to imagine the worst. Could this playboy have been her husband?
Peter Rowland: good-looking, charming, superficial; about 35
Viola: sophisticated, attractive; early 40s
Mrs Battersby: practical, motherly; middle aged
