Summary
As the methods of assessing Income Tax favour the unmarried husband and wife, Edmund (an unsuccessful author) and Esther agree they have nothing to lose and everything to gain by a purely formal and amicable divorce. But they have reckoned without the devoted Henry who has long cherished a love for Esther, and without the daughter of the friends with whom Edmund has been staying, who fancies she has given her young and inexperienced heart into his safe keeping. The way to their remarriage is not made clear until Edmund finds he is no longer unsuccessful as an author (and therefore the financial reasons for the divorce no longer obtain), and until Esther has teased him out of his quixotic notions of his duty towards his friends, and has wrung from him a confession of his continuing love for her.
