Summary
Old Mrs Honeysett, a rather peevish invalid living in a lonely cottage, has an instinctive fear of her companion, Miss Gaunt. This is seen to be well-founded when, after the departure of the dairy maid, Miss Gaunt drops her mask of amiability and forces her employer to reveal where she keeps her money. They are interrupted by a knock at the door. It is Mrs Honeysett's neice Cathy, with the maid, who has been secretly sent to fetch her. Miss Gaunt sends them away on the pretext that the old lady is asleep. She stirs six sleeping tablets, a fatal dose, into Mrs Honeysett's gruel, and is about to force is down her throat when Cathy and the maid burst in, their suspicions having been aroused. Disregarding Miss Gaunt's lies and her final plea for mercy, they summon the police.
