Summary
Anne Pollock is exploited by her lazy and selfish family. Her mother has always traded on a supposed weak heart, Grandma is a cantankerous old wretch and Betty, Anne's married sister, has arrived with her baby to live with them while her husband is serving abroad and spends her time amusing herself. Some years ago, Anne was courted by George Harrison, who went to New Zealand, did well there, and has now returned to marry her ands take her back with him. Mrs Pollock had previously put a spoke in the wheel by pleading ill health, and tries the same dodge again. She hopes to manoeuvre Anne into a marriage with their landlord, living opposite. The girl will not consider this, but she does agree to stay with her mother. Luckily, a neighbour discloses that the doctor has given an excellent report of Mrs Pollock's health. The family is outrageously inconsiderate in its demands that night, and Anne, clear-sighted at last, walks out to join George.
