Summary
Christopher Riddesdale, a head gardener, has settled down to be faithful to his old love, Flora Marston, a schoolteacher who preferred to marry a "town" man. Actually, he is very contented with Becky, his housekeeper who is deeply in love with him. Flora, now a widow, suddenly turns up "to make Chris happy at last". But Chris is setteld in his ways. The countryman and the town woman soon find themselves at loggerheads, and after an angry scene Flora leaves him for ever. Becky then announces that she is going to leave him also and leads him to suppose that she has already taken another job. But Chris cannot take her departure calmly. He loves her and tells her so in his own peculiar way. Becky sees that her ruse has at last btought him to his knees, and after keeping him there for a while she finally agrees to become his wife.
