Men in Shadow

In 1942 the disused mill-loft of a French farmhouse, belonging to Moy and his mother Chérie, gives shelter to a little group of Englishmen -Lew, a grounded airman, Kenny, his cockney mechanic and the somewhat older Polly - who are working with the underground resistance movement. Lew has just bumped off the local Gestapo chief and there is a big reward offered for his capture. The other two rescue a commando soldier, who immediately volunteers for dangerous service from which he does not return. Lew brings in a crashed RAF pilot, Mordan, a former friend of his, and Chérie sets his briken legs. Next day she brings in another RAF pilot who produces docments to convince them of his identity as Enshaw, but Mordan eventually remembers where he has seen him before - attached to the German Legation at Shanghai. Further investigation reveals he is a spy on their track. They liquidate him. Since their hide-out is to be requisitioned by the Germans, they plan to hoist Mordan through a trapdoor and get him over the roof to Chérie's attic, meanwhile Lew remains with him while the others run off to warn their friends. Before their return, the Germans arrive. Lew struggles desperately to heave the wounded man to safety. It is just in the nick of time, for the Germans break in. He distracts their attention, with Moy's help, by feigning idiocy, then makes his own getaway.
