Summary
It is the morning of June 4th, 1940. Celie is living with her mother and father on the Kentish coast. In the night they have been hearing the sound of guns and they are worried because Celie's father went out the previous night on some mysterious errand and has not returned. Celie's husband Jim is with the army in france; she has dreamed that the postman calls with a telegram from the War Office - a dream that she had had once before when her brother was killed. But this time the name on it is Jim's. Her father returns and reveals that he has been to the beaches at Dunkirk. He has not seen Jim but believes him to be safe. But the stories he tells of the evacuation do not help to reassure Celie and at lst the postman does come with a telegram. It is to say the Jim is safe and will soon be home on leave.
