Summary
Countess Oriana, a White Russian exile, exists in a dingy Paris room with her maid Nina and Nina's mother, Chita. Though now penniless, ill and totally unknown, she continues to treat her servants like slaves. Eventually Nina is driben to killing her mistress by smothering her with a cushion. Chita then reveals that Nina had the same father as the Countess. Together with Breda, servant of another imperious exile in the same house, Chita pulls Oriana's body onto a matress and Nina takes her place. When the doctor arrives he is told tit is the servant who had died.
