Ted, undergoing a mid-life crisis, leaves the house he and home-loving wife Beryl have shared for thirty-two years. At first Beryl is shattered, but gradually works back from the edge of despair, helped by her exuberant daughter Angie and down-to-earth neighbour Dawn.
