Summary

Skilfully adapted by Ron Nicol from the famous original story by Hans Christian Andersen, this is the story of Gerda, a little girl who searches for her friend Kai when he is bewitched and imprisoned by the Snow Queen in her ice palace. Gerda's innocence charms all good people and animals she meets on the way. They help her to the royal court, and on to Lapland, where good conquers evil and the children are reunited.

History

The Snow Queen was first presented by Glenrothes Theatre Company in Glenrothes, Fife, Scotland in 1996.

There are 17 speaking characters, with possibilities for doubling, trebling or even quadrupling of roles – Grandmother, the Old Hag, the Lapp Woman and/or the Finn Woman could all be played by the same person, for example. There can be any number of trolls, robbers and Ice Attendants. Several characters can be either male or female, but as there isn't a gender-neutral pronoun in English “he” has been used throughout and should be changed where necessary.
