The framework of this spine tingler is unusual: a lawyer hires an actor to tutor him in recounting to family and friends a story that has long troubled him concerning events that transpired when he attended the funeral of an elderly recluse. There he caught sight of the woman in black, the mere mention of whom terrifies the locals, for she is a specter who haunts the neighborhood where her illegitimate child was accidentally killed. Anyone who sees her dies! The lawyer has invited some friends to watch as he and the actor recreate the events of that dark and stormy night. A classic of the genre.

This is a wonderful piece of storytelling that draws the audience in as if sitting around a campfire.  The script is marvelous in that it does not require over the top production values to engage the audience.  It is satisfying to see a production that calls on one to use their imagination.

I read the play and the book and then saw it performed at a professional theatre.  It is hard to believe in today's technical age of computer special effects that an evening in the theatre can create such suspense. While the script challenges the actor, it lets the audience use something I think often overlooked in today's entertainment - their imagination. I am looking forward to our own production of this play.

This play really shows the power of storytelling. Not only is the reader himself being told a story, but the actor character who is hired to perform it is also new to the lawyer's disturbing tale. The fact that this story has an actual life to it and was an experience of one of the characters adds purpose to the story; it's not just something to tingle the spine, it is an attempt at release for this man. But how does one find absolution without burdening another? This is something to be pondered after reading this play.

The Woman in Black is a great read on a cold night with the fire blazing. It reaches beyond the point of any old ghost story by really letting you get to know these characters and the struggles they have faced and have yet to face. It is easy to be sucked into it's mystery and even easier to be found looking over your shoulder every now and again…
