In Poland in 1665, following the Cossack uprising, over a third of the once thriving Jewish community has been slaughtered; the rest are left impoverished. Everyone is now obsessed with the certainty that the Messiah will come. Hearing that the Messiah is preaching in the Middle East, Rachel and her family journey to Gallipoli, with tragic results.
